I started working as an intern for one of the local radio stations. It was a really fun job, and I was getting college credits at the same time. My boss at the radio station was really cool, and I new a lot of the guys at work. After I had been there for a couple of months, one of the radio DJs asked me to house-sit. I was really honored and a little freaked out. I had never spent time as a house sitter in the past, and I was going to be responsible for a very large house. The DJ live right on the beach, and one of the most expensive neighborhoods in our whole city. I was going to be house-sitting for an entire week, while he and his family traveled to Europe for a wedding. I arrived at the house and everything went very well for the first few days. I started to wonder why I was ever worried in the first place. On the third day, the A/C system stopped working. I had no idea why there was no air conditioning, but I woke up covered in sweat. I knew that I hadn’t done anything wrong, but the A/C system wasn’t working. I tried to call my dad, but he had already left for work. I looked at the thermostat, and it appeared to be working as normal. The temperature still said 70 degrees, and the switch was still set to the A/C system and Auto. I knew that I was going to have to call my boss and tell him about the A/C troubles.
Ever since I moved off-campus, it has been one non-stop problem after another. I already missed one day of class this week, and a very important lecture yesterday. This morning, I woke up to find that all of the pipes in the house were frozen. I had the fireplace in the bedroom running all night long, and I didn’t realize that the heating system was not working. My landlord said that the heating system probably stopped working around three in the morning, but I have no way to tell. There was no hot water this morning, and a huge water leak in the kitchen. When the pipe under the kitchen sink froze, it crumpled into a million tiny pieces. There was water all over the floor, and I had to contact a plumber. So, now I am waiting for a plumber and a heating repair technician. It’s going to be another fun day of having to explain my absence to my professors. I have had so many recent issues, that they must think I am full of baloney by now. I don’t know why the heating system stopped working, but there wasn’t anything I could do about the problem. My landlord happens to live about 12 hours away from the property, so I have to stay and let the heating repair technician and plumber into the house. I never had any of these problems when I lived in the dorms. I never missed any classes, but I hardly ever got enough sleep for my exams. It might be time to reconsider my living situation.
Today’s thermostats are nothing like the type of thermostat that was in my home growing up. Our old thermostat was brass colored and spotted with rust. It had a plastic dial on the top and it was broken in half. You could barely see in side of the dial, so it was a guess about the daily temperature. It was difficult to tell if the thermostat was set to 60 or 70 degrees, so we never knew if it was properly working or not. I had the opportunity to buy a brand new thermostat this week. I had not shop for a thermostat ever in my life, and I was amazed by all of the different options. I had many different colors to choose from, and many shades of black and white. All of the thermostats were digital, and some had even more advanced features. After speaking with a member of the hardware team, I decided to purchase a smart thermostat. The smart thermostat has an 8-inch digital LED display screen. The numbers on the thermostat are very large and easy to read. The thermostat has a handy remote that can control many of the different features. This new thermostat can even be controlled by my cellular telephone, but I haven’t figured out how to do that yet. My grandson is going to come over and visit this weekend, and I am going to ask him to set up my phone. I am very happy with my new purchase, and I can’t wait to see all of the cool features that are on my phone.
For the past five years, my wife and I have been living in the same house. We bought the house when we moved into the city, and we have been living here ever since. A couple of months ago, my wife and I both started working from home. We both happen to be Executives with the same company, and we have created a home office for both of us. My wife and I have separate offices, and each of us like to have different settings for our HVAC system. When we decided to work from home, we also upgraded entire home HVAC system. The two of us decided to go with a ductless split system. This type of HVAC system is wonderful for our house, because we can individually set the temperatures in our offices. Both of our offices have their own HVAC thermostat. We can easily change the settings on the system, depending on whether we are too hot or too Cold on that day. The ductless HVAC system is also equipped with a smart thermostat, and my wife and I have really enjoyed all of its features. One of the coolest features of our new HVAC system, is the fact that we can control the temperature from anywhere. The thermostat has an application on our phone, and we can easily adjust the settings from our cell phone or tablet. My wife and I have noticed a small decrease in our monthly utility bills, and I think it might be due to the brand new heating and cooling system.
It’s the middle of October right now, and my wife and I are shopping for a brand new furnace. Shopping could not have come at a worse time, because the outdoor weather is already increasingly cold. The nighttime temperatures are dipping into the 40s, and we still haven’t found the proper furnace for our home. Last winter season, our furnace stopped working around the middle of March. Thankfully, we were close to the end of the winter season and did not need to buy a new furnace at that time. Unfortunately, we spent the entire summer worrying about the air conditioner. We never once thought about buying a new furnace, until the weather started to turn colder. Now we are only a few weeks away from freezing temperatures, and we are still searching for the perfect furnace for our home. My wife and I have been looking at a few different types of heating devices, but the two of us seem to be stuck on purchasing a new gas furnace for our home. We currently have a gas furnace, but we’re hoping to change out to an electric or oil furnace. We have experienced a few troubles with the gas furnace in the past, and we’re hoping to switch to some sort of new heating device. It looks like we are going to stick with a gas furnace, because they are reasonably priced. Our system is already setup for a gas furnace, and that seems like an easy transition for us to make. We have to find a unit that is more energy efficient than our last furnace.
A few weeks ago, my wife’s boss started making hints about her going to a conference next weekend. My wife came home to tell me about the conference, and I knew she was going to have to go. My wife and I had not been alone together for quite some time, and I decided to take a few days off of work to go along with her. The conference was this past weekend, and we spent the entire weekend in the city. We both had a really nice time, and we got to see a show at one of the local theaters. We visited two very nice restaurants in the area, and even enjoyed a cup of coffee at one of the famous local bistro. We enjoyed a lot of the sites, and learned a little bit at the conference along the way. My wife and I decided to find our own hotel room, because we did not want to stay at the location of the Convention. As long as we were paying for our own room, her boss did not seem to care where we stayed. My wife and I were happy to have found a different hotel, when we heard about all of the trouble. A few of our friends were complaining about the A/C units, because they were loud and noisy during the night. More than a few different people describe those hotel rooms as ancient and ragged. Not only were, but the A/C units look to be about 20 or 30 years old. A friend of mine could not sleep all night long, because the A/C unit kept making loud banging sounds every 20 minutes.
Dorm living is totally for the birds! I am so over it, I really am. I have a full scholarship that comes with dorm living for my entire four years. But, I am two years into my education and I really think it is going to kill me. There are so many problems with dorm living, I don’t know where to start. You don’t get to pick your roommate for one. You would think they would have a questionnaire, so at least they would choose someone at least a little bit like you! The noise is never ending at all hours of the day and night. But, I think the worst for me is their Heating and Air Conditioning or lack thereof, I should say. I just don’t understand that these dorms don’t have the newer modern HVAC units installed. Instead we get a boiler system type of heating that goes on at times when you aren’t even home. This means if you aren’t in the building when the heater deems cold enough to turn on, then you are not getting any heat. Oh, and air conditioning? Apparently, since they are afraid we will jump out the window, we are only allowed to open the window a quarter of an inch! We couldn’t put a window box air conditioner in there even if we wanted to! I did try to sneak in a portable electric heater last month, but the resident advisor totally busted me. She really sympathized with me, but said it was a fire hazard for the building. If she got caught allowing any outside heaters, she would lose her job.
My husband has been bugging me for years to take a train trip across the country. It just didn’t sound fun to me in any way. Trains can be dirty, stuffy and filled with processed air. It was an accident waiting to happen, as far as I was concerned. I also tend to be claustrophobic, so I couldn’t see him ever convincing. Then one day he showed me a brochure. I asked him what it was for and he said the train travel. Wow, they have actual cabins and suites on the trains now. They even have personal showers! This train trip had your very own personal HVAC system to adjust your thermostat to whatever temperature you wanted, hot or cold. This was looking really attractive. I decided to give it a try. The first day, all was wonderful. It really did feel luxurious and seeing the country in such style was amazing and stress free. But, the second day was when I became very unhappy. Our personal HVAC system stopped working when I went to adjust the thermostat. My husband took a look at it, but nothing was coming out of the air vents. I couldn’t believe this was happening. I didn’t want to take this trip, I was totally skeptical. The cabin steward came very quickly to look at the HVAC system. He checked all of the switches and investigated the thermostat to no avail. As a last resort he changed out the air filter and for some reason that did the trick. He said that these HVAC systems are so new, that they can still be finicky. I was just glad he fixed it, for I was really enjoying myself.
Every summer our church picks one thing to do a major fundraising campaign towards. We ask people to tithe their income all year long, while there is one campaign after another. So, we really need to be selective and careful for what we choose. While Climate Change has been a deciding factor in many services and events, we realized that we needed to focus on upgrading our heating system. The current heating source is literally three decades old. We seem to just keep repairing bits and pieces of it each winter, but nothing ever holds very well. In fact, you can’t really even say that it is a great source of heat when it is working. The worst scenario would be that people stop coming to church because it’s too cold for the service. We definitely don’t want this to happen. So, our fundraiser is for the church heating upgrade. The irony had everyone laughing all day long through the fundraiser. We were having a BBQ on the church grounds charging by the plate. We also had a dunk book, some carnival type games and even raffle tickets for a few different prizes. I say irony, for it easily had to be about eighty degrees outside and we were trying to raise money for a heater. This irony was not lost on anyone, and we all had a great laugh over it throughout the fundraiser. We raised enough money that day for the heating upgrade as well as the five year annual maintenance plan. The company was even nice enough to add five more years for free, since we were a non-profit institution.
This year I took a full-time summer job at the local beach resort. There aren’t too many types of jobs in our area during the winter. So, you really want to find a good paying job for the summer, where you can make enough money to hold you through the winter months. I have heard nightmare stories about working at the resort. This is the first year my parents let me get a job. Apparently, the people who travel here are mostly wealthy families. They expect a lot for their money. They like to be waited on and they certainly don’t like their money to go to waste. Last week we were having some serious issues with the central cooling system. No one could pinpoint the problem at first. We called in the local team of HVAC technician’s, since we knew this could take some time. It was heating up fast. The first thing they had us do was go from room to room changing out all of the air filters. Their thought was maybe something got caught up in the system through the filter. Once we had done that relatively fast, there was no change. The HVAC team had been working down in the ductwork while we were changing out vents, but no one was finding any one problem. The lead manager was sweating profusely, and it wasn’t because of the lack of air conditioning. The clientele had started to really complain at this point, and they were going to stand to lose a lot of money. Then one of the young kid HVAC interns suggestion checking something in the main unit. Sure enough, a simple little part broke off that could be replaced quite easily. The intern saved the day and his boss promoted him in that moment!
